New York Times bestseller The World Needs More Purple People written by Kristen Bell and Benjamin Hart and illustrated by Daniel Wiseman is a book of rules for children to follow if they want to be purple. Being purple is special and to be purple you must follow five steps that are explained by Penny a child that learned these rules from her family. The first is about asking questions and this is important because asking questions makes you purple. Penny asks her dad all sorts of questions and he is happy to answer and listen. The second step is with her grandma who teaches Penny that purple people laugh a lot. The time spent with her grandparents is filled with laughter and jokes. The writers remind us that children playing and laughing makes us purple as well. As Penny narrates through each step, we see that being purple is about being happy, dancing, working hard, sharing opinions, and just being yourself. The remaining steps tells us that we should accept people for who they are no matter who they are and what they look like. The illustrations are done with soft colors and simple drawings of happy people. Overall, the book is about spending time together, learning important lessons, and being a good person.
