Where the Mountain Meets the Moon

A fiction book from Grace Lin set in China about Minli who is seeking the Old Man of the Moon. She lives in the Village of Fruitless Mountain and her family is very poor. Minli goes on a journey seeking the Old Man on the Moon who can change her future because he has the power to change the future for fortune. On her journey, Minli runs into a dragon who she invites with her to find the Old Man on the Moon. They go to the City of the Bright Moolight to speak the King of the city and he gives them gifts to help them on their journey. While on their way to the Never-Ending Mountain, Dragon is poisoned and Minli goes out to find a cure. Dragon is healed after Minli finds some medicine. The two twins that helped them find medicine for Dragon lead them to the Old Man of the Moon where he only allows her to ask one question to change her future. She must decide whether to help her family or to help Dragon get his wish of flying. Minli decides to do the right thing and help Dragon to fly only to learn that the Dragon’s gift makes her village incredibly wealthy. A magnificent story for a lesson on bravery and selflessness.
