A Geisel Award winner of 2009 by author and illustrator Mo Willems. The illustrations focus on two characters while the background is all white. Hearing this style feels like it might lack some context to the story, but the main characters provide more than enough engagement and charm. Elephant and Piggie are hanging out when suddenly a little bird lands on Elephant’s head. The little bird decides to take up residence on his head. Piggie and Elephant go through comical exchanges about what the bird is doing, which includes falling in love to having baby birds. This story will help children think about what to do rather than panic in unexpected situations. Other books in this series with similar themes by Mo Willems includes An Elephant & Piggie!, An Elephant and Piggie! Volume 2!, and An Elephant & Piggie! Volume 3.
Teachers use this for ELA curriculum standards by having students answer questions about story elements. Similarly, students can write their own stories using Elephant & Piggie in unusual situations
