Winner of the 2021 Caldecott Medal We are Water Protectors by writer Carole Lindstrom and illustrator Michaela Goade who provides illustrations that depict nature with colorful and inspiring portrayals of nature. Lindstrom writes about the fight of indigenous peoples to preserve their most precious resource water. The fight is against the black snake that will destroy the land and its animals. The author uses the black snake to symbolize the current use of oil pipelines that are destroying indigenous land. This is a social justice book where the author uses protest to show how we can fight to protect nature combined with indigenous songs and drums. Any teacher or parent can use this book to show we all must protect nature as well as teaching the preservation of indigenous lands and culture.
