A picture book and Coretta Scott King award winner from Grace Byers and illustrator Keturah A. Bobo. I Am Enough is a poem and picture book about a young African American girl that salutes her abilities and the other young girls around her. She fights, loves, dreams, learns, runs, loses, but does not give up. Without favor, the little girl recognizes the differences in her friends from their skin, eyes, hair, and frame. And so, they say together when things are tough and in harmony of each other’s differences, I Am Enough. Also, Grace Byers and Keturah Bobo published another successful book called I Believe I Can in 2020, which empowers children to believe in themselves.
Health teachers can use I Am Enough as a lesson in self-worth and self-acceptance. Similarly, ELA teachers can have students write their own poems about themselves using similar language elements.
